Dave & Coleen
The establishment of Lynfer Estate has been another chapter in the journey of David and Coleen Boyd who immigrated to New Zealand in 1988. David is originally from Northern Ireland and Coleen from the Falkland Islands.
Their decision to embark in a vineyard venture was made in 1998 and after searching for a suitable site, land was purchased on Dakins Road in the Gladstone area of the Wairarapa. The vineyard is on the old stony terraces above the Ruamahanga river.
The Vineyard
The principle of integrity begins in the vineyard. Grape cultivation is managed in a way that enables the production of quality fruit using environmentally responsible processes in accordance with the ‘best practice’ guidelines of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.
Vines are grown on a Vertical Shoot Positioning trellis with 2 metre row spacing. Rows are oriented north-south for maximum exposure of the fruit bunches to sunlight, a requisite for premium quality wines in a cool climate region.
